1. Engine overheating. If your temperature gauge is in the red or steam is coming from under the hood, pull over immediately and turn off the engine. Driving an overheating engine can cause catastrophic damage — warped heads, blown gaskets, or a seized engine. Call a tow rather than waiting for it to cool and driving on.
